Assistant Buyer - Full Time

About the Role

  • We are looking for an Assistant Buyer to join our Commercial team and support the procurement of materials across multiple residential construction projects, from pre-start through to completion.
  • Working closely with the Buyer and wider Commercial department, you will play a key role in ensuring materials are procured accurately, cost-effectively and in line with company specifications and construction programmes. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career in procurement within the housebuilding industry.
  • Wyatt Homes is committed to developing talent, and this role offers clear progression with the long-term objective of managing procurement independently on your own projects.
  • The Assistant Buyer will report directly to the Buyer and will be indirectly accountable to the Commercial Director. The role works closely with a range of internal departments including Construction, Design and Technical, Finance, Sales and Marketing, and Customer Care, as well as liaising regularly with external suppliers and consultants to support the effective delivery of projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procurement and commercial support.
  • Assist in the preparation of tender enquiries and the evaluation of supplier quotations.
  • Support the comparison and recording of material prices in line with agreed construction budgets.
  • Help prepare material schedules and quantities from drawings, estimates and specifications (with training provided).
  • Ensure purchase orders are accurately raised with correct quantities, pricing and delivery details.
  • Support compliance with company material specifications and trading agreements.

Supplier and Internal Communication

  • Liaise with suppliers to obtain quotations, confirm orders and follow up on outstanding information.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and internal departments.
  • Provide administrative support relating to supplier performance, pricing issues and lead times.

Financial and Budgetary Assistance

  • Assist with invoice reconciliation where discrepancies arise, working closely with the Finance team.
  • Support invoice matching processes to ensure timely payments.
  • Maintain accurate records of pricing, orders and supplier agreements.

Project Coordination

  • Support the tracking and progression of material deliveries to meet construction programme requirements.
  • Attend internal meetings such as pre-starts and development meetings when required.
  • Assist in communicating specification details and material changes to site teams.

Systems & Administration

  • Maintain and update procurement systems, databases and document control with a high level of accuracy.
  • Prepare reports, schedules and cost information to support commercial decision-making.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills.
  • Numeracy and a practical understanding of costs and budgets.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and basic construction specifications (training provided).
  • Confident IT skills or a willingness to develop them.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines.
  • A collaborative team player who can build effective working relationships.
